COACHING CLINIC
*Update*
Due to a lack of interest and funding we will not be moving forward with the March 31 coaching clinic. thank you to those who did express interest. see you all soon!
COMPETITION
- Speed Competitions will be best of 3 runs. The best time out of 3 runs will be your score
- Style Competition Judging will be based on;
- Amplitude – How big you go
- Difficulty – How hard the tricks are to successfully land
- Style/ Execution – Smoothness, did they make the trick look easy and did everything go exactly as they planned
- Landing – Did the board land flat and the rider stay up right, did their hand touch down during the landing, did they not land the trick.
- A winner for each discipline will be crowned and an overall winner for each category will also be crowned!
- In case of a tie breaker, the winner will be determined by events won
- In the rare case that does not clearly define a winner it will go to a head to head event decided by the judges.
GEAR
- Helmets must be worn at all times
- WARM GEAR! There will be times where you may be standing around. You can always take layers off.
- Rental gear is available please contact Ragged Riders to confirm prior to the event. raggedriders@outlook.com or @Ragged Riders Snowsports
- Please bring any other protective gear you feel necessary (spine protector, wrist guards, etc)
LUNCH
- Lunch and snacks will be provided by NWT Snowboard
- Please email nwtsnowboard@gmail.com if you have any allergies or dietary restrictions
COACHING TIPS
- Try your best and have fun!
- Stick with the tricks you know. Attempting new tricks at events can ultimately hurt your score and can be dangerous, stick to what you’ve practiced!
- Find a happy medium of pushing yourself with difficult tricks but still maintaining your ability to go large off jumps and stay smooth on any and all features
- Use your warm-up wisely! Understand how fast you need to be going for the run and the conditions (speed check), go through your trick list so you know what’s working and what’s not working on the day and always go through a full range of motion before riding to prevent and injuries
FAQ
What about the weather?
- If the weather is colder than -30C the lift will not be in operation, the event will continue but riders will be expected to hike up the hill
- More realistically in April, we have a lack of snow. If there is not a enough snow to safely hold a competition the event will be cancelled so postponed but that will only be due to extreme conditions
Am I good enough to ride in Territorials?
- Are you feeling unsure about your ability to compete in Territorials? That’s okay everyone feels like that at some stage and the good news is you ARE good enough. Not only do you not need to compete in every category but the only person you’re competing with is yourself! If you are trying to push your limits and improve your riding every time you go out then that is exactly what the spirit of Territorials is all about.
Is this an Arctic Winter Games Trials?
- No. This was a tough decision to make for the NWT Snowboard board of directors and here is how the decision was made
-
- In the past we have done Arctic Winter Games trials every second Territorials right before the games to select Team NT. Last year the board decided to host Games trials the year prior to establish our Team NT riders a year in advance. This allows us to focus on those athletes and strive to give them camp/clinic opportunities to best prepare them for Arctic Winter Games and/or Canada Winter Games.
-
- Due to this past season being jam packed with Arctic Winter Games and Canada Winter Games along with the preparation involved we were very restricted to what weekend to hold Territorials. We came to the conclusion that there wasn’t a weekend that would accommodate all NWT riders interested in making the Arctic Winter Games team for 2024. We plan to return to our previous format after the 2024 AWG trials are complete
-
- Currently the AWG trials have been tentatively scheduled for January 2024. Weather will be a factor and an announcement will be made when the dates for trials have been confirmed.
